COVID-19 Emergency Rent and Debt Forgiveness - Condonación de renta y deuda -

We believe that an immediate moratorium on collecting rent and mortgage for the month of April and forgiveness of interest, late fees, or the owing of that month's rent in the future should be implemented. Options for deferring mortgages should be discussed. This moratorium, forgiveness, and deferment should continue as long as the critical and necessary social distancing continues, or longer as the economy recovers.

Why is this important?

As a group, the working class of California have been financially devastated by the critical and necessary measures put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Though the federal government may eventually provide relief, the immediate conservation of our limited financial resources is necessary for our own and our family's health and well-being. Rentors, Leasors, banks and other relevant institutions can, as a class seek their own relief; the state and federal government is much more responsive and historically more likely to act on their behalf. We must protect our limited cash flow immediately.

At the city level 150k signatures was impressive. At the State level we need a million. Spread the word. Get more signatures. We can use that as leverage to talk to the media, to show this petition as it's growing to politicians and let them know that their jobs are at stake.

The city of Los Angeles is unable to do this. I have changed the petition to aim it at the state. Please contact you state senators and assembly members http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

I altered the English version of the petition to make the stance on mortgages more clear.

We have gotten part of what we want in the petition. A moratorium on fees, penalties, and other charges for late rent. Now we need to call, write, email our city councilmen and tell them that we support this, that this is what we want! They will hear us. Especially as the vote comes before the city council.

This policy sounds great, and is better than nothing. But forbearance sucks. All the interest you don't pay is added to the principal. You end up with another 5 years on the loan with a one year break. True relief is called deferment, where interest is paused, and payments are suspended.

Moratorium on collection, DEFERMENT of interest, help now.
