Beautiful people,

We are encouraging you to donate your full or partial stimulus check to undocumented folks in Seattle. Please consider donating or sharing; our communities appreciate any form of solidarity.

Washington Community,

The recent Coronavirus--COVID-19--community spread has compelled us to handle our health with the utmost importance. As we’ve transitioned into new phases of the outbreak, we have also witnessed vulnerable communities affected by the lack of economic support from our city and state. Undocumented folks along with elderly and disabled folks not only see this as a public health concern but as an economic crisis. As student organizers at South Seattle College, my peers and I have created this fund to provide rent assistance to undocumented people in Seattle affected by the pandemic.

As a former undocumented person, I know how it feels to lack support in a country that views me as a burden. Let’s take care of our undocumented communities in Seattle; Let’s show them that we will stand in solidarity with them.

We are aware that Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an emergency moratorium on evictions due to COVID-19 but it is not enough. An individual may not be evicted during the grace period but what happens when the grace period is over? Regardless of the moratorium, undocumented folks will still struggle to allocate money to make ends meet.

Why are we focusing on undocumented folks?

1. Most, if not all, undocumented folks in Seattle are not earning minimum wage. As a result, their income is much lower and they struggle to make ends meet.

2. Some undocumented families are unable to implement a savings plan because they send remittances to their families (grandparents, parents, children, etc.) in their home country.

3. Undocumented single mothers are sole breadwinners and if their hours are cut, they will not have another source of income.

4. A large portion of undocumented folks are in the hospitality industry and as we know, this industry is being drastically impacted by COVID-19.

5. It is common for Spanish-speaking undocumented people to face discrimination and verbal abuse from landlords. Though the eviction ban will last for 30 days, abusive landlords may threaten to call ICE on them.

Where will the money from this Fund go?

We cannot guarantee how much each household will receive since rent amounts vary. However, we will limit the maximum amount per household to 1,000 dollars (special circumstances are exempt from this).

We are currently connecting with community organizations and activists to refer us to undocumented folks in need of rent assistance. Once we get in contact with folks, we will discuss logistics (payment type, landlord's name, and office address).

The support, which will be given by check or money order, will be delivered directly to the landlord or landlord's office. I will personally drive down each landlord's office. In addition, we’ll commit to collecting detailed rent receipts and scanning them into a Google drive folder designated for this fund. Our organizer, Nelsy, will also track all expenses on a Google spreadsheet. All of these efforts will create transparency between us and our donors.

I want to make it clear that I will not share any specific details that will jeopardize our communities. However, I will share with you the EXACT AMOUNT that has been spent and the number of families that we’ve helped.

For transparency purposes: We have set up an account named, "Rent Fund For Undocumented People" to be able to withdraw the funds. The beneficiary's name is Eufemia Mazariegos Diaz. She's my family member; I asked her if we could use her bank account to be able to withdraw the funds. She agreed and we are now hoping to withdraw the funds to her Bank of America account.

Are we a non-profit?

No, we are student organizers at South Seattle College who have experience with community organizing and interacting with undocumented communities. Most of our focus at our college has been community building and what better way than to bring our community together to support undocumented folks!

Thanks for your support.
